Narrowboat Hire – Wey Navigation and Basingstoke Canal

The Wey and Godalming Navigations and the Basingstoke Canal can be cruised by entering from the River Thames near Weybridge. Both are surprisingly tranquil waterways running through beautiful and peaceful countryside, despite their closeness to London and suburbia. Both waterways are independently managed so require additional cruising licences.

  • The Wey Navigation, managed by The National Trust, is 17 miles long, part river, part canal with 12 wide locks taking 2 days to cruise. For licencing information see here.
  • The award-winning visitor centre at Dapdune Wharf on the Wey in Guildford tells the story of the Wey and Godalming Navigations and the people who lived and worked on them.
  • The Navigations are a wildlife sanctuary, with canal towpath and countryside walking trails.
  • The Basingstoke Canal is 34 miles long with 29 wide locks taking 3 days to cruise. It’s jointly owned by Surrey and Hampshire County Councils. Licencing details see here.
  • Greywell tunnel collapsed in 1932 and cut off the route to Basingstoke, King John’s castle is nearby.
  • The section of the Basingstoke canal from the Wey to the summit level can suffer from water shortages but the 20 mile summit level isn’t usually affected.
