Cockerel’s in the Cut

John was born on a canal and in Cockerel’s in the Cut he shares anecdotes about the hardships, humour, and rivalry experienced by boating families on the canals. His parents worked for Fellows, Morton and Clayton Ltd., a well-known canal carrier. Later, his family worked for Thomas Clayton (Oldbury) Ltd. on tanker boats that transported gas between the Midlands and Ellesmere Port. After that, they worked for Samuel Barlow Coal Co. Ltd., transporting coal from the Coventry coalfields to London.

Dr. Lucy Waldron, Mavis’s daughter, edited the book. She wrote an appreciative foreword describing how her family met the Blunns many years ago. This second edition of the book (2016) includes additional material and illustrations, some in colour.

John fell in love with Mary Nixon, who came from another boating family. They worked together on the canals before switching to commercial carrying on narrow canals when the demand for canal transportation declined. Sadly, Mary passed away in 2004. However, John eventually returned to the boats, working on restored boats such as Stour and Cepheus. In 2015, he married Mavis Waldron, with whom he had been boating.
