Roses & Castles – An Introduction to Traditional Narrowboat Decoration

The style of painting known as “Roses & Castles” was popular among the working boats that navigated the narrow canals of England and Wales over the past two centuries. Its origins are unknown, but it was developed uniquely by dock and boatyard painters across the country, resulting in different variations such as Braunston, Knobstick, and Polesworth. Jane Marshall, who has been conducting canal painting courses for two decades at The Old Stables by Audlem Locks on the Shropshire Union Canal, delves into the history of Roses & Castles and its local styles.

Jane also highlights the Masters, who are some of the most significant boat painters of the 20th century, and current artists who continue to preserve this art form. She provides illustrated, easy-to-follow instructions on how to paint roses, daisies, and castle scenes, and introduces simple techniques for lettering and wood representation (scumbling). With a water can or boat, you can now try your hand at this beautiful art form!
